Car Transport Guide India: How to Safely Ship Your Car Anywhere

Whether you're relocating to a new city for work, buying a car from another state, or simply need to move your vehicle across India, car transportation is a specialized service that requires careful planning. Driving long distances isn't always practical — it adds wear, tear, fuel costs, and days of travel. Professional car transport services offer a safer, more convenient alternative.

This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know about shipping your car within India, including costs, carrier types, documentation, and preparation tips.

Types of Car Transport Services

1. Open Car Carrier (Most Popular)

Your car is loaded onto a multi-car open trailer — similar to what you see transporting new cars from factories to dealerships.

  • Pros: Most affordable option (30–40% cheaper than enclosed). Widely available. Faster loading/unloading.
  • Cons: Exposed to dust, rain, and minor road debris. Not ideal for luxury or vintage cars.
  • Best for: Standard sedans, hatchbacks, and SUVs for intercity moves.

2. Enclosed Car Carrier

Your car is placed inside a fully enclosed container or trailer, protected from all weather and road conditions.

  • Pros: Complete protection from elements. Insurance premiums are lower. Peace of mind.
  • Cons: 50–70% more expensive than open carriers. Less availability.
  • Best for: Luxury cars (BMW, Mercedes, Audi), vintage/classic cars, and brand-new vehicles.

3. Flatbed Trailer (Single Car)

A dedicated flatbed truck carries only your car. Premium service with the fastest delivery.

  • Pros: No other vehicles, zero risk of scratches from adjacent cars. Fastest transit.
  • Cons: Most expensive option. Usually 2–3x the cost of open carriers.
  • Best for: Super-luxury cars, show cars, and urgent deliveries.

How to Prepare Your Car for Transport

Before Pickup

  1. Wash your car thoroughly: A clean car makes it easy to spot any pre-existing scratches or dents. Document the current condition with timestamped photos from all angles.
  2. Remove personal belongings: Transport companies are not liable for personal items left inside the car. Remove dashcams, GPS units, phone holders, and parking tags.
  3. Check fluid levels and tire pressure: Ensure the car is in running condition. Low tire pressure can cause damage during loading/unloading.
  4. Fuel level: Keep the tank at about 1/4 full — enough for loading/unloading but not adding unnecessary weight.
  5. Disable the alarm: An alarm going off during transit can drain the battery and disturb other vehicles in the carrier.
  6. Retract antennas and fold mirrors: Minimize protrusions that could be damaged.
  7. Note existing damage: Walk around the car with the pickup driver and note every scratch, dent, or chip on the condition report. Both parties should sign this document.

During Transit

  • Most reputable companies offer GPS tracking — ask for the tracking link.
  • Expect a call from the driver when they're 2–4 hours away from the delivery location.
  • For long-distance transits (5+ days), request a mid-transit update.

At Delivery

  1. Inspect thoroughly before signing: Check the car against the condition report. Look for new scratches, dents, tire damage, and windshield cracks.
  2. Start the car: Check that it starts, brakes work, and no warning lights are on.
  3. Document any damage: If you find new damage, photograph it immediately and note it on the delivery receipt BEFORE signing.
  4. File a claim promptly: Most insurance claims must be filed within 24–48 hours of delivery.

Required Documents for Car Transport

  • Registration Certificate (RC): Original or clear photocopy
  • Insurance papers: Valid vehicle insurance document
  • Owner's ID proof: Aadhaar card or Passport
  • NOC (No Objection Certificate): Required if the car is financed and the bank holds the RC
  • Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate: Must be valid
  • Spare keys: Provide a spare key to the transport company

Car Transport Insurance

Most professional car transport companies offer two types of coverage:

  • Basic Coverage (included): Covers total loss due to accidents, fire, or natural disasters. Does NOT cover cosmetic damage (scratches, dents).
  • Comprehensive Coverage (additional 2–4% of car value): Covers everything including cosmetic damage, mechanical failure during transit, and theft.

For cars valued above ₹10 lakh, we strongly recommend comprehensive coverage. Learn more in our moving insurance guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does car transport take within India?

Short distances (under 500 km): 1–3 days. Medium distances (500–1500 km): 3–5 days. Long distances (1500+ km): 5–8 days. Express/dedicated service can cut these times by 30–40%.

Can I transport an electric vehicle (EV)?

Yes. EVs require special handling — the battery should be between 30–80% charge. Inform the transport company in advance as EVs are heavier and may need specific carrier types.

Is it safe to transport a modified car?

Modified cars (lowered suspension, body kits, aftermarket exhausts) need extra care during loading. Inform the company about modifications so they can use appropriate ramps and securing methods.

Can I ship personal items inside the car?

Technically, most companies prohibit this. However, some allow a small bag in the trunk (under 20 kg). Any items left inside are not covered by insurance.
